Leave No Trace

Level One Instructor

Taught by Kim Waites, Level 2 Instructor and Alabama State Advocate

This 16-hour virtual Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor course is grounded in real-world field experience, stewardship work, and years of teaching outdoor ethics across a wide range of audiences. Designed for both outdoor enthusiasts and professionals, this course goes beyond the basics to explore not only the 7 Leave No Trace principles, but the deeper “why” behind them—connecting practical skills with the ethics and science that support responsible recreation.

The course includes 10 hours of live, interactive instruction via Zoom and 6 hours of asynchronous coursework. Participants will be actively engaged throughout, including preparing and teaching one of the 7 principles to the group—building both confidence and the ability to effectively share Leave No Trace with others.

This training is ideal for hikers, backpackers, trip leaders, educators, and agency staff who want to strengthen their understanding of low-impact practices and develop skills to teach and model stewardship in their communities or professional roles.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor certification valid for two years.
